Arabidopsis thaliana phylome reconstructed

Arabidopsis thaliana phylome reconstructed

By tgabaldon

A phylome for the model species Arabidopsis thaliana has been reconstructed. This phylome provides information on the evolutionary relationships of A. thaliana genes and their homologs in 15 other plant and algal species.

The pea aphid genome is the first to be annotated using a comprehensive phylogeny-based approach

The pea aphid genome is the first to be annotated using a comprehensive phylogeny-based approach

By tgabaldon

Within the context of the sequencing of the genome of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, we undertook a phylogenetic analysis for every protein of this species. The resulting phylome includes the evolutionary relationships of all predicted aphid proteins and their homologues among 13 other fully-sequenced arthropods and three out-group species. Subsequent analyses have revealed multiple gene expansions that are specific to aphids and may provide hints on adaptations to a particular diet and developmental biology.

Phylome analysis helps to unravel incipient speciation steps in halophilic bacteria

Phylome analysis helps to unravel incipient speciation steps in halophilic bacteria

By tgabaldon

A recently published genomic comparison of two Salinibacter ruber strains isolated from the same location has revealed interesting insights into the process of creation of genomic variation within microbial populations (Peña et al. ISME Journal 2010). The work includes the phylogenetic analysis of the full genomic complement of both strains accross a large taxonomic scope including other sequenced bacteria and archaea.
